Normally you should stand in the center of the house out of the main door.
However, if you do that sometimes, there is some magnetic field which shifts
your compass needle a bit. Which is why, sometimes a reading from the
outside is needed to confirm that the compass is not affected by the
building structure.
However, if you use a shielded compass, then this would not matter. Please
check Cecil's compass method. This is quite accurate and easy. This
elminates many of the problems of the standing outside.
